The Program
The Saint Vincent Health Center School of Medical Technology is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The school has been educating medical technologists since 1946 and is an academic affiliate of several colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The affiliates grant the baccalaureate degree upon successful completion of the program year. Agreements with non-affiliated schools are arranged as needed.
Academic Calendar and Courses
Classes begin each July and continue for a full 51 weeks. Lectures and student laboratory experiences are completed from August through March of the program year. From April through July, clinical rotations are completed in the laboratories of Associated Clinical Laboratories, Community Blood Bank of Northwest Pennsylvania and Saint Vincent Health Center. Graduates are eligible to take the ASCP Board of Certification MLS (ASCP) Examination.

Tuition
Tuition for the 2011-2012 school year is $7983. Textbooks cost between $560 and $630. There are no other fees or charges.
Admission Requirements and Application
Students must already possess or be a candidate for a baccalaureate degree at the senior level in an accredited college or university. There is no application deadline, but students are encouraged to complete and submit applications during the months of August through October.

Technical Standards — Essential Functions
These standards have been developed in compliance with the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The technical standards in effect are as follows:
- Adequate physical health is necessary to meet the job requirements of a medical technologist, so as not to present a hazard to the health of the student, patients or employees.
- Adequate emotional health is necessary to work safely and accurately under stress.
- Adequate hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills are necessary to meet the job requirements of a medical technologist.
- Normal or corrected eyesight is necessary in order to safely and accurately perform patient testing. Colorblindness will not preclude admission, but will be noted and compensated for during the program year in order to accurately interpret testing procedures that depend on color recognition and interpretation.
- Students must provide their own health insurance coverage during the program year.
- Students must maintain a minimum 70 percent grade performance in all lecture subjects in order to advance to the clinical rotation portion of the program year.
- Students must maintain a minimum 70 percent grade performance in all clinical rotation review examinations and performance evaluations in order to complete the clinical rotation portion of the program year.
- A nonrefundable deposit of $500 is required of all individuals accepting an offer of admission in order to hold a place in the upcoming class. This deposit is deducted from the total tuition charge.
- Students who completed their undergraduate education in foreign countries where English is not the predominate language must submit results of the TOEFL Examination and the results of an independent Transcript Evaluation with conversion of grades and credits earned to standards in use in the United States.
- Students are responsible for the total amounts charged for tuition and for textbooks, including any amounts in excess of financial aid received. All charges must be paid in full before the date of the final examination.
