From a sprained ankle to the most serious illness or injury, WMH’s experienced emergency medical staff is the region’s front line medical care team. As a result of the WMH/Saint Vincent Health System affiliation, Westfield Memorial Hospital patients also have unlimited and immediate access to specialists that compliment the WMH emergency team. An example is Saint Vincent’s 24/7 cardiology service that is available for consultation and advice to the medical emergency team at WMH. Through the advancement of telemedicine, a patient in the emergency room in Westfield, N.Y., can be treated by a board certified cardiologist in Erie, Pa. EKGs can be taken by the team in Westfield and immediately interpreted by the cardiologist at Saint Vincent in Erie. This can save more than the time and inconvenience of a trip to a medical center an hour or more away. It may save a life. If a patient is, indeed, having a serious heart problem, Saint Vincent cardiologists can make a diagnosis, and life saving treatment can begin. If a transfer to Saint Vincent is required, it can be done safely, by ambulance or a helicopter, with the patient in a stabilized condition.
